Here are 11 things on our weekend agenda:

1. See the Mexican-American War come alive Saturday at the President James K. Polk Memorial in Pineville.
2. Have a howling good time at the N.C. Zoo in Asheboro Saturday with games, face painting and hands-on activities while learning about North Carolina Red Wolves.
3. Enjoy a weekend out with Thomas the Tank Engine and his friends at the N.C. Transportation Museum in Spencer Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
4. Hear bluegrass music’s brightest stars during this weekend’s World of Bluegrass event in Raleigh.
5. Explore the work of some of North Carolina’s most promising artists at the new Point and Counterpoint: N.C. Arts Council Fellows, 2014-2015 exhibit opening at the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (SECCA) in Winston-Salem Thursday.
6. Celebrate Thomas Wolfe’s birthday Saturday in Asheville with free tours of the Old Kentucky Home, now the Thomas Wolfe Memorial.
7. Learn how to care for your family’s heirlooms by getting advice from the House in the Horsehoe’s staff Saturday in Sanford.
8. Take a tour of Durham‘s 21c Museum Hotel–a combination boutique hotel, contemporary art museums and culture center–Thursday with the N.C. Museum of Art Contemporaries.
9. Hear the music of three great Russian composers as performed by the N.C. Symphony Friday in Southern Pines and Sunday in Wilmington.
10. Join Tar Heel artist Craig Richards for a painting workshop overlooking scenic Moore’s Knob Saturday at Hanging Rock Park in Danbury.
11. Explore the New Bern Academy Museum at Tryon Palace in New Bern for free Saturday as a number of local history organization present Civil War-related programming.
